New Haven Register sports columnist killed in I-91 crash

Dave Solomon, a longtime sports columnist for the New Haven Register, was killed in a one-car crash on I-91 in Cromwell, Conn., Saturday night. He was returning from covering University of Connecticut football’s first practice of the season.

The Register cited state police reports, saying the car left the highway and struck a tree off the left shoulder.

“Every Sunday I cannot wait to go out to the driveway and get my New Haven Register to read Dave’s “I was thinking” feature as it was by far my favorite sports reading every week,” said Quinnipiac Director of Athletics and Recreation Jack McDonald. “Dave Solomon was an icon of New Haven sports and I and all at Quinnipiac will miss one of the best sports writers in the nation and even more we will miss a true friend.”

Solomon, 59, worked at the Register for more than 35 years. He graduated from UConn.

“All of us at the Register are reeling from this tragic news. In my opinion, there was nobody better at what he did than Dave,” said Register editor Jack Kramer. “He knew sports, he knew people, he told great stories.”

Solomon is survived by his wife, Judy, and daughters, Abby and Lisa. Solomon’s wife requested his regular Sunday column run today. Services have not been arranged, the Register said.

Very sad news. I interned there this summer and only spoke to him a few times, but he was a friendly, good guy and a terrific writer. RIP.
