The Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team scored three unanswered goals to defeat Colgate, 3-1, Saturday night at Starr Rink for its first Eastern College Athletic Conference Hockey victory.

As the Bobcats improved to 1-2-1 in ECAC Hockey, the Raiders (0-3-1 ECAC) are still looking for their first ECAC win.

Junior captain Scott Zurevinski proved his leadership on the team, as he lifted the Bobcats with two second-period goals.

Both teams were scoreless in the first period, but rookie Chris Wagner scored the first goal of the game 58 seconds into the second period to put the Raiders on the board.

After Colgate put a tally on the board, Quinnipiac kicked it up a notch as Zurevinski netted his first goal of the game at the 12:34 mark. On a three-on-one, junior Yuri Bouharevich faked a shot and slid the puck to Zurevinski’s stick. Zurevinski dumped the puck past Colgate goalie Eric Mihalik to tie the game 1-1. Zurevinski registered his second goal of the season as Bouharevich picked up his team-leading sixth assist.

With a little more than a minute of play left in the second period, the referee lifted its arm up to whistle a delayed penalty against Colgate. With control of the puck, the Bobcats pulled sophomore goalie Eric Hartzell and added an extra skater. With a six-on-five man advantage, junior defenseman Mike Glaicar passed the puck across the point to sophomore defenseman Zach Currie. Currie sent a pass down to Zurevinski below the face-off circle, who one-timed a shot over the shoulder of Mihalik to give the Bobcats the go-ahead goal.

As the Bobcats scored on a delayed penalty in the second period, they jumped on their next power play advantage. As a slashing call put senior forward Austin Mayer in the penalty box, the Bobcats scored the insurance goal on the power play. Freshman defenseman Zach Tolkinen passed the puck to his defensive partner Zach Davies at the point. Davies slapped a shot through traffic that freshman forward Connor Jones tipped past Mihalik to give the Bobcats a two-goal lead. Jones tallied his second goal of the weekend and his third of the year.

With Jones’ goal, the Bobcats ended the night going 1-for-8 on the man advantage, while the Raiders failed to capitalize on their six chances the power play.

The Bobcats were outshot 31-27, but Hartzell improved to 2-0-0 on the year as he stopped 30 of Colgate’s 31 shots on goal.

After meeting Colgate for the 17th time since Quinnipiac joined ECAC Hockey in 2005, the Bobcats improved their all-time record against the Raiders to 8-8-1 with a 3-4-1 mark at Colgate’s Starr Rink.
