The Quinnipiac women’s hockey team tied No. 4 Clarkson 1-1 on Saturday, giving the team its second straight three-point weekend to move them up to fifth place in ECAC Hockey.
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead with just under a minute remaining in the first period on a goal from forward Brittany Lyons. The Bobcats took the lead into intermission despite being outshot 16-6.
Clarkson tied the game at 10:43 in the second period with a power-play goal from Melissa Waldie. The Bobcats were shorthanded five times during the game.
“We took two bad penalties for their tying goal,” Quinnipiac head coach Rick Seeley said. “Otherwise I thought that we could have rode out a 1-0 win.”
Freshmen goaltender Victoria Vigilanti tied a career-high with 37 saves to help Quinnipiac (16-8-8, 9-4-7 ECAC) stay undefeated in its last five games.
“My defense kept everything to the outside and cleared rebounds; it was like a goaltender’s dream,” Vigilanti said.
Vigilanti and the Bobcats picked up their third point of the weekend by tying Clarkson (20-8-4, 14-4-4 ECAC), which is ECAC Hockey’s top-ranked team.
“We have to walk away happy with the three points, but also know it could have been four points,” Seeley said.
Untimely penalties cost the Bobcats the fourth point Seeley was looking for.
“We took penalties – our strong point this year has been discipline – and not taking those penalties was a perfect example of how it cost us and hopefully we learn from it,” Seeley said. “We have been pretty steady the past seven, eight weeks, we need to just keep getting better and more disciplined and work toward putting together that perfect game.”
The Bobcats remain at home next weekend when they finish up the regular season against Yale on Friday and Brown on Saturday.
