With her 16th goal of the year, Quinnipiac’s Kelly Babstock broke the women’s ice hockey team’s single-season scoring record in a 4-0 win over the Brown Bears Friday night at the TD Bank Sports Center.
The freshman broke Hayley McMeekin’s record from the 2006-07 campaign. Babstock also contributed an assist in the game.
“From the first game [Babstock] has just produced almost every game, it’s something I’ve never had as a coach,” Quinnipiac head coach Rick Seeley said. “One of the special things about her is that as talented as she is, she wants to be better. She’s coachable, she’s listening, and she’s working hard at it.”
The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead just a little more than two minutes into the game on junior defender Bethany Dymarczyk’s third goal of the season. Dymarczyk took a slap shot from just inside the blue line on the left side of the ice, and put the puck into the top-right corner of the net.
“We are so impressed with Bethany,” Seeley said. “When she showed up here as a freshman, no one thought she was a division-1 hockey player. She’s just continued to get better, she didn’t have a shot her freshman year, and she worked at it. She’s diligent in the summers, training, and she’s become a big time key for us.”.
Babstock’s goal at 15:56 in the second period extended Quinnipiac’s lead to 2-0. Babstock took a wrist shot from the left side of the net after gathering a rebound. Erica Uden Johansson and Shelby Wignall assisted the goal.
Later in the second period, senior forward Kelley Davies scored the Bobcats’ third on a power play. Davies scored on a wrist shot from the left side of the net after receiving a pass from Elena Orlando.
Orlando picked up her second assist in the third period, when junior forward Chelsea Illchuk scored the team’s fourth goal with just under a minute left in the game.
Four goals were more than enough for sophomore goaltender Victoria Vigilanti, who shut out the Bears with 17 saves.
“[Vigilanti] was solid, but I don’t think there were any big saves,” Seeley said. “I think the team played a great team defense so she was protected for the most part,” “We are pretty happy.”
Quinnipiac outshot the Bears 40-17 in the game.
The Bobcats have won three games in a row, and improved to 12-6-1 (5-5 ECAC). With the loss, the Bears fell to 2-7-2 (1-4-2 ECAC).
The Bobcats are next in action Saturday at 4 p.m.
