The Vermont Catamounts handed the Quinnipiac Bobcats their first regular season home loss since Feb. 26, 2009, beating the Bobcats 79-75 on Saturday at the TD Bank Sports Center.

Both teams went on big runs in the second half. Vermont turned a six-point halftime lead into a 16-point lead with 11 minutes to go.

The Bobcats then cut the deficit to two points with 22 seconds left, but wouldn’t get any closer.

“When they punched us with their offense, I think we staggered a little bit and took too long feeling sorry for ourselves,” Quinnipiac head coach Tom Moore said.

Vermont senior forward Evan Fjeld led all scorers with 23 points, 21 of those in the second half.

Quinnipiac senior forward Justin Rutty led the Bobcats with 19 points and nine rebounds. James Johnson added 18 points and six rebounds, and also had five steals.

Freshman guard Dominique Langston had a career night with 34 minutes and 14 points.

“I go by trust, how much I trust putting a guy into the game,” Moore said. “[Langston is] gathering my trust at a really rapid pace. He’s certainly moving up the depth chart. Out of all the young guys, he’s head and shoulders playing better than any of the new faces.”

The Bobcats will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Hanover N.H. to face Dartmouth at 7PM.
