Friday afternoon’s game was nothing short of amazing, for Quinnipiac field hockey showing energy and relentleness to take down the Villanova Wildcats 2-0. The Bobcats looked poised and showed strength and growth throughout the match, proving why they are one of the top teams in the Big East.
Coming into this game, the Bobcats captured four straight wins before taking on Villanova, with this win extending their overall record to 9-5 on the season. This is the first time that the Bobcats have gone on a four-game win streak since 2013.
Bobcats gained possesion early, taking it deep into the field and applying immediate pressure, but would be challenged by a strong Villanova defense that would force them to cause a turnover to start.
Freshman Rozemarijn Van Wensen and senior midfielder Mo Quaile played a great game, providing the Bobcats with excellent defense and making multiple stops and contributing to the offense in the first half of the game.
The Bobcats continued to push the tempo early despite a powerful effort by Villanova. Villanova’s defense was exceptional despite a very sluggish and harsh start on offense.
Quinnipiac would try to force a big play early, but would miss a prime opportunity to take the lead early in the game.
Additionally, Quinnipiac played great defense in the first, making lots of stops on the Wildcats and converting those interceptions into potential chances early on.
On the other hand, Villanova showed no signs of fatigue or slowing down. The Wildcats would continue to combat the Bobcats, who dominated both offense and defense.
The Bobcats communicated well throughout this game, something that the Wildcats seemed to struggle with. Communication helped improve the play of the Bobcats, making the right strategic moves to throw off Villanova’s defense.
Going into the second half, the Bobcats looked to correct their various turnovers committed throughout the first half. Sophomore midfielder Francisca Eschoyez did a great job of getting around and away from defenders to make critical and aggressive counters at the start of the second half.
The Bobcats played with great poise and aggressiveness to start the third quarter, getting a penalty in the opening minutes.
Wildcats continued to play good defense, making multiple shots towards the goal in an effort to put Quinnipiac behind them.
The Bobcats would get another penalty corner at 13:17 after a brief review. This would prompt an attack by Calvaya, who had been taking an amazing charge on offense the whole game.
Calvaya would miss the attack, but Senior forward Cameron Brower was there to fix the mess and get the first goal for the Bobcats, with a fierce attack towards the goal.
Villanova would start struggling to convert shots into goals throughout the third quarter.
Eschoyez would score the Bobcats’ second goal, just six minutes after the Brower goal. Eschoyez would be strong on defense, as well as she controlled the left-hand side of Villanova’s half of the field, making it a struggle point for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats showed their weak points throughout the matchup, as their players struggled to play consistent defense in the backfield.
On the other hand, Bobcats showed their quick breakout and fierce attacks towards the goal, which helped them score their two goals.
Quinnipiac will host Northeastern Sunday, Oct. 18. Game is set to start at 1 p.m.
