After coming off of a dominant win against Stonehill College on Sept. 6, Quinnipiac looked to extend that win streak, before ultimately falling to BU 4-2.
The Bobcats looked to build off their momentum from Stonehill, as they shipped it up to Boston to face the Boston University Terriers for the final contest of their three game road trip.
Going into the game, BU was seeking its first win of the season after dropping its first three games. Ultimately, the Terriers were able to come away with the win, beating Quinnipiac 4-2.
BU started with the ball and came out firing, scoring within 13 seconds of the game off a quick entry into the offensive zone. The Terriers’ early goal set the tone for the game. They forced Quinnipiac to be defensive and limited the Bobcats’ offensive opportunities.
Quinnipiac struggled to generate offense early, despite three consecutive penalty corners, which they failed to convert on. The Terriers continued to pack on the pressure, adding a second goal to their tally and extending their lead to 2-0. The Bobcats continued to struggle with getting the ball into the offensive zone and were held scoreless after the first quarter.
BU went right back on the attack as soon as the whistle sounded at the start of the second quarter. Just 3:26 into the second quarter, freshman forward and midfielder Molly Driscoll of BU stretched out to score a tip-in goal that went over the head of Quinnipiac goaltender junior Cristina Torres.
After 21:26 into the game, Quinnipiac netted their first goal of the match. Freshman forward Maaike Van Wensen scored off a corner after Quinnipiac sustained offensive pressure in the shooting circle. After their goal, the Bobcats settled into the game and possession was equal although neither team was able to score again before halftime. At the end of the half the score was 3-1 in favor of the Terriers.
In the third quarter, the Bobcats had multiple scoring chances, including a player advantage when BU senior forward Caroline O’Brien got a green card. Despite this, strong defense from BU kept Quinnipiac from closing the scoring gap. The Terriers also had multiple scoring opportunities but strong goalkeeping from Torres kept BU off the scoreboard in the third. In the last 10 seconds of the quarter, the Bobcats were awarded a penalty corner but the shot missed just wide. With neither team scoring in the third quarter, the score remained 3-1.
At the start of the fourth quarter, Quinnipiac came out strong, taking the ball into the offensive zone before their efforts were stopped by the BU defense. BU eventually extended its lead and went up 4-1 early in the quarter.
Quinnipiac persisted, and their efforts paid off when sophomore midfielder Fransisca Eschoyez converted a corner with under two minutes to play, scoring her team leading fourth goal of the season, bringing the score 4-2. In the final seconds of the game, Quinnipiac got another ball in the back of the net but the goal was disallowed.
The final score was 4-2 in favor of the Terriers.
The Bobcats look to get back in the win column in their next game against the undefeated Columbia University Lions on Sunday, Sept. 14 in Hamden at 12 p.m.
