A Quinnipiac University first-year student created a petition Monday to halt the creation of triples – three people in a double room – in The Village residence halls following a decision from Quinnipiac Housing that was announced earlier today.
As of 6:07 p.m., the petition gained 146 signatures, 47 minutes after the petition’s creation.
Last week, Residential Life moved the first-year housing selection date to April 14 and 16 without explanation.
In the email from Melissa Karipidis, associate director of housing, sent to first-year students at 4:36 p.m., this decision was attributed to the increased percentage of students who wish to live on campus, with “100 more students than anticipated submitted contracts.”
“While we are pleased to have this response, this necessitated a change in room capacities in some sophomore housing areas to standard room capacities before 2020,” Karipidis wrote.
The “Reverse Housing Department’s Decision on Village Room Assignment Policy” was made by “Julia M.”
“This sudden and unanticipated shift has left many students in a position where they must scramble to find an additional roommate to fill the third bed, causing undue stress and inconvenience,” the petition states. “Instead, the housing department should take up the responsibility of assigning the third bed themselves, rather than forcing students to scramble and find a roommate.”
The students assigned to the triple will receive a $500 reduction on their cost for each semester in that room.
The email also mentioned the possibility of students creating triples in The Hill residence halls, but unlike in The Village these rooms are not mandatory.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
