Despite the late rally, the Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team fell to No. 9 Mercyhurst 4-3 on Saturday afternoon.

Quinnipiac now falls to 0-1-1 on the season while Mercyhurst improves to 3-0-1.

Nicole Kosta broke the point scoring streak set by Kelly Babstock last season. Kosta now has recorded a point in nine consecutive games.

With less than four minutes to go, Babstock collected a rebound off of Kosta’s shot and fired it passed Mercyhurst goalkeeper Stephanie Ciampa.

With 2:02 remaining, Regan Boulton capitalized on a power play opportunity after Mercyhurst’s Gina Buquet received two minutes for elbowing and Molly Byrne got called for cross checking, leaving Quinnipiac with a two-man advantage. Babstock passed to Kosta who then found Boulton who shot and hit the puck off the crossbar and into the goal.

Quinnipiac’s first goal came 16 seconds into the second period from Kosta, while Babstock and Cydney Roelser picked up the assists.

“They’re the only ones producing right now,” Quinnipiac head coach Rick Seeley said about Babstock, Kosta and Erica Uden Johansson.

Quinnipiac’s goalie Chelsea Laden took the ice and saved 35 shots.

“Chelsea has proven herself at this level,” Seeley said. “There was no reason not to play her.”

The Bobcats were outshot 39-23 in the outing.
