The Quinnipiac field hockey team had an eventful afternoon ahead of them on Oct. 6, whether they knew it or not.
Taking on Rider University, the Bobcats did know the game was not going to be an easy win.
Earlier this season, the two teams met in New Jersey and played over regulation and two overtimes to penalty strokes. Quinnipiac took the win that day, 3-2.
In this second match-up, senior co-captain Jackie Langenstein slipped he ball by the Rider goaltender off an assist from sophomore Meredith Klein, late in the first half.
The regulation time ended in a draw, and two sudden death overtimes ensued.
With 5:53 remaining in the second overtime, senior co-captain Courtney Ryan dove to tip in a shot from Kristen McCarthy, following a scramble in front of the cage.
Freshman goalkeeper Erin McKay made nine saves in the 2-1 victory.
Shortly afer the celebration ended, the reigning NEC champions held a clinic for local youth field hockey players.
Anyone was welcome to join the Bobcats for the clinic, in which Quinnipiac players went over the basics of the game of field hockey.
Cheshire High School and Mercy High School in Middletown sent their teams to get some pointers from the Bobcat team.
Meanwhile, on a neighboring field, the men’s soccer team was breaking their scoreless streak.
In the 3-2 loss to Mount St. Mary’s, Stephen Presig capitalized on a header from Paul Dworak with 25 seconds left in the first half, slipping the ball past the goaltender.
Just over 20 minutes into the second half, junior Stephen Drosopoulous took a pass from senior Jay Mamman to put the Bobcats within one.
Unfortunately, Quinnipiac could not find any other opportunities to put the ball in the goal, and fell to 0-4 in NEC play.
In fall baseball action, Quinnipiac won the City Series Tournament for the second consecutive year.
The Bobcats softball team also won their City Series Tournament this fall.
Taking on teams from Yale, Southern Connecticut State University and the University of New Haven, both Bobcats teams had members named Tournament MVP’s.
For the baseball team, sophomore Brian Magee was named MVP. Magee drove in four runs in the opener against UNH.
Quinnipiac took the title 5-4 over Southern Connecticut.
In softball action, freshman Brandi Simon was the tournament’s most valuable player.
Simon hit the go-ahead double in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead Quinnipiac to the championship over UNH, 7-3.
The softball team was also successful in the Connecticut Fall Classic Tournament held in Vernon, Conn., earning wins over in-state rivals University of Connecticut and cross state competitors Briarcliff Junior College of Long Island, N.Y.
