Women’s Basketball: UMass ices ‘Cats in final

The Quinnipiac women’s basketball team was able to make it to the finals of the Brown Bear Classic last weekend, defeating Morgan State in the semifinals, 68-57, before eventually falling to the University of Massachusetts, 82-66, in the finals.

The UMass bench made all the difference in the championship game, outscoring Quinnipiac’s reserves 38-10. The defense was not enough to contain the UMass attack, especially in the second half, when the Minutewomen shot 56 percent from the field. Two UMass players finished with more than 20 points while the Bobcats’ leading scorer was sophomore Jackie Mann with 15.

Quinnipiac stuck with UMass throughout the first half, trailing by only two points at halftime.

“We were playing to win [Saturday] to get ourselves into a championship game,” Quinnipiac head coach Tricia Fabbri said. “It’s not just good enough to make it to these games anymore and I wish we had the answers in the second half today.”

Their defense was not able to keep up with the Minutewomen’s offense in the second half, as they were outscored 49-35.

Quinnipiac’s defense had a much stronger showing in its semifinal game against Morgan State, holding the Lady Bears to 27 percent shooting from the field. Senior guard Kathleen Neyens led the way with 17 points and three assists.

Even though the Bobcats notched a double-digit win, the bench was still outscored by Morgan State, 27-13.

The Bobcats now stand at 2-4 on the young season.
