Quinnipiac defeated Sacred Heart 18-9 in the semifinals at Quinnipiac Field Hockey and Lacrosse Turf Field. The win earned them a spot in the finals Sunday against Mount St. Mary’s, who beat Robert Morris 13-8 yesterday.
“I was very proud of them,” Quinnipiac head coach Danie Caro said of her team. “We had a great game plan; they executed it. It wasn’t a perfect game, but they don’t have to be perfect. They just have to be better than Sacred Heart, and today they clearly were.”
The Bobcats scored nine goals in each half, compared to Sacred Heart’s four and five. Jennifer Skipper (5), Lauren Matuszczak (4), Marissa Caroleo (3), Devon Gibney (2), Christine Sinnigen (2) and Lianne Toomey (2) all contributed in Quinnipiac’s 18 goals.
“I give everybody an A,” Caro said. “No A-pluses, but I’ll give them an A today. They did what they needed to do, and I’m just really happy that they were able to get some momentum early and keep it going the entire game. They didn’t let up.”
Bobcat goaltender Noelle Martello made 13 saves throughout the game compared to Pioneer goalie Megan Pepe, who made seven.
“If [the Pioneers] weren’t in it and we didn’t get to beat them on the way, it wouldn’t have felt right after losing to them,” Caro said. “It would’ve been nice if we did it in the finals, but we’ll take whoever we have to play. They just want to win.”
