Just as he did last week against Brown, Quinnipiac goalie Eric Hartzell got the start in net for the second game of a best-of-three playoff series. Just as he did last week, he shut his opponent out.
Quinnipiac withstood an elimination game Saturday night at Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y., beating Cornell 1-0 to take Game 2 and force a deciding third game in the ECAC quarterfinals.
Sophomore Jeremy Langlois scored the only goal of the game with six minutes remaining in the first period. Hartzell did the rest, stopping all 24 shots on goal from Cornell.
“We knew this game was going to be a battle,” Langlois said. “We knew our guys would come out and play hard tonight. We knew we had to score first, we did, and from there it was just a battle.”
For the second straight series, Quinnipiac head coach Rand Pecknold went with a different goalie for the first two games.
Last week, Dan Clarke earned a shutout in Game 1 against Brown, and Hartzell matched the shutout in Game 2.
Clarke got the start last night in Game 1, when Quinnipiac suffered a 2-1 loss.
Quinnipiac goalie coach Justin Eddy didn’t have an answer as to who would get the start in the deciding game.
“They’re both playing phenomenally right now,” Eddy said. “I dont know personally who will start tomorrow. We’ll see tonight who has the fresh legs.”
Game 3 is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight.
Just like Quinnipiac-Cornell, each of the other three quarterfinal matchups will have a decider tomorrow. Yale trumped St. Lawrence, Dartmouth defeated Harvard in OT, and Colgate picked up the win against Union.
