The Quinnipiac Braves volleyball team returned to Burt Kahn court this past weekend for a Tri-Match Tournament. Parents weekend brought in many spectators,filling most of the bleachers.
Quinnipiac was coming off two wins over Rider and Long Island University, and looking to improve their 3-7 record.
In the first match of the day, at noon, the Braves beat the Catamounts of Vermont, three games to none. The Braves were wearing their home navy blue uniforms, with white numbers, and the Catamounts had their road white, with yellow and black
numbers.
The Braves took the first game of the match, 30-21. Vermont was able to mount a small comeback with six un-answered points, but Quinnipiac held strong and took the game out of grasp. Quinnipiac took the second game, 30-17. Vermont had some uncalled for errors. Service errors, missed balls, and lack of communication all lead to a time out with Quinnipiac up 20-14. The Braves came out strong after the
stompage, dishing out a 10-3 run to close the game out. The Braves then closed out the match by taking the third game, 30-24. Quinnipiac took a quick lead, 9-4, forcing Vermont to call a time out.
“We have plenty of time, we just need some points now,”exclaimed Vermont head coach, Rick Gouse. The Catamounts did get some points, going on a 6-1 run, and forcing the Braves to use a time out. The Braves then closed the game out after a few tough volleys.
In their second match of the day, the Quinnipiac Braves defeated the Jaspers of Manhattan College.
The two teams split the first four games, all of which could have gone either way. Both teams were playing their best, matching shot for shot, and point for point. The deciding fifth game is what it would come down to. Quinnipiac took the early lead, 7-5, forcing Manhattan to use a time out. After the game resumed, Quinnipiac scored two un-answered points, making the lead 9-5. Quinnipiac used a time out when the two teams were tied at 14 a piece. Following some great battles back and forth, Quinnipiac went on to an 18-16 victory in the game, and three games to two wins in the match.
The Braves improved their record to 5-7 after both wins Saturday. The Braves next home game will be Sunday October 14th, at 1:00 pm, against Sacred Heart.
