The university will remain closed for the rest of the day due to the snowstorm, according to QU Alerts.

Quinnipiac originally closed offices and cancelled classes until 4 p.m. on Feb. 8, but sent out a second alert to students shortly before 1:45 p.m. closing the university for the rest of the day.

Vice President for Public Relations John Morgan said the decision was made to ensure everyone’s safety.

“The university offers several tools that allow faculty members to hold classes without meeting with their students in person,” Morgan said. “Whenever the university is closed and classes don’t meet in person, students are strongly encouraged to check online for possible communications from their professors.”

Associate Vice President for Facilities Keith Woodward said the snow removal process is going well across all three campuses.

“The dedicated men and women of the Facilities department are working tremendously hard to clear each campus to make them as safe as possible for our students and other members of the university community,” he said in an email.

Woodward said Facilities will work throughout the evening to clear the snow on all three campuses.

“The majority of the sidewalks and parking lots are cleared, but with the snow continuing, the situation remains in flux,” he said.

Parking and Transportation Coordinator Shanon Grasso sent an email earlier today to students, faculty and staff saying all shuttle services will be suspended other than a limited service between Mount Carmel and York Hill campuses. Shuttle services will resume tomorrow at 6 a.m. weather permitting, the email said.

Grasso also said students, faculty and staff need to park their vehicles in their assigned locations on the Mount Carmel campus because the vehicles parked on Bobcat Way, Hill Village Circle and Commons Circle are hindering snow removal. She also said all vehicles parked on the York Hill campus in the Crescent, Eastview and Westview parking lots must be moved to the parking garage.

Chartwells also adjusted its schedule for Cafe Q, which will close at 8 p.m., rather than 9 p.m. The York Hill Cafe and Bobcat Den will keep their regular schedules and close at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m., respectively. The North Haven Cafe has been closed all day.

Students, faculty and staff received a QU alert around 6 a.m. announcing classes would be cancelled until 4 p.m. and university offices would remain closed throughout the day. The alert also said there will be a meeting later today to make a decision about cancelling classes after 4 p.m., depending on the conditions.

“The decision to close the university until 4 p.m. on Feb. 8, was made after university leaders assessed the weather forecast and conditions on all three campuses,” Morgan said in an email. “The forecast this morning called for the storm to end this afternoon, providing sufficient time to clear the snow from the parking lots and walkways on all three campuses and hold classes after 4 p.m.”

Parking and Transportation Coordinator Shanon Grasso also sent an email to students, faculty and staff announcing the cancellation of shuttle services, except for a limited service between Mount Carmel and York Hill campuses. She also said the shuttle service may resume at 4 p.m. depending on the weather.
