The Bobcats men’s hockey team made the long trek up to Orono, Maine, last weekend to play in the annual Black Bear Classic.
Quinnipiac first faced Lake Superior State University in Alfond Arena. In the first ever meeting between the two teams, LSSU claimed the win, 2-1.
All three goals in the contest were scored on power plays, including the lone Bobcat goal scored by sophomore Chris White halfway through the second period. Senior Brian Herbert assisted on the goal.
Sophomore goaltender Jamie Holden put in a 30 save performance against LSSU, but the Bobcats couldn’t capitalize on a late powerplay to tie the game.
LSSU moved on to the second day of play in the Black Bear Classic to take on the University of Maine, who beat the University of New Brunswick on day one. Quinnipiac was set to play a tough game against New Brunswick on day two.
Junior goaltender Justin Eddy stopped 29 shots in his first game of the season, which ended in a 2-2 tie.
Sophomore forward Matt Froehlich made his mark against New Brunswick, scoring both goals in the contest. The first came from fellow sophomore Matt Craig in the second period.
On a power play less than two minutes later, Craig drove down the left side and connected with Froehlich again to put the puck past the New Brunswick goalie.
The game remained tied throughout the overtime period and concluded in a shootout to determine tournament placing. New Brunswick won the shootout 4-1.
The host team the University of Maine claimed the Black Bear Classic Championship, defeating LSSU 8-1.
Quinnipiac ice hockey is back in action at the Northford Ice Pavilion this weekend against Bentley College.
