Volleyball: Pioneers put down Bobcats in straight sets

The Quinnipiac volleyball team was swept 3-0 by Sacred Heart Sunday afternoon at the Burt Kahn Court. Freshman Logan Riker finished the match with 11 digs despite the loss.

Kayla Lawler had 19 assists and eight digs, and Kelby Carey posted a team-high seven kills.

Sacred Heart took the first set 25-17.

The Bobcats responded in the second set by holding one-point leads of 17-16 and 18-17. However, the Pioneers came back and took the set 25-20.

“We changed the defense toward the middle of the match, so we got some digs they did not expect,” Quinnipiac head coach Robin Lamott Sparks said.

The Bobcats did not let up at the start of the third set, as they took an early 5-2 lead, but the Pioneers answered again and went on to win the set 25-12 to ice the match.

Sparks said her team showed an improvement from its last meeting with Sacred Heart.

“Last time, they tore us up,” Sparks said.

Aside from the team’s play is a health concern with H1N1 buzzing around.

“We are hoping everybody stays healthy,” said Sparks, “They are not allowed to talk to anybody who is sick.”

With the loss, the Bobcats’ record fell to 2-13 NEC and 3-25 overall. The Pioneers improved to 11-3 NEC and 21-9 overall.

The Bobcats will honor their two seniors as they play host to St. Francis (Pa.) Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. for the last regular-season game of 2009.
