Women’s volleyball swept by Long Island

The Quinnipiac women’s volleyball team failed to win a set on Sunday as the Long Island Blackbirds beat them 3-0 at Burt Kahn Court.

The first set belonged to the Blackbirds as kills by Annika Foit and Sapphire Reid gave Long Island (9-10, 4-1 NEC) an early 11-4 lead. Quinnipiac (2-15, 1-3) pulled within three points after going on a 7-2 run, but kill attempts by sophomores Olivia Grattan and Bonnie Conklin were blocked at the net. The Bobcats also committed eight errors in the first set as they lost 25-15.

The second set was tightly contested in the beginning, but the Blackbirds started to pull away, led by junior Jessica Rice and sophomore Hanna Gibeau. Long Island scored seven straight points to take a commanding lead, but Quinnipiac’s Kayla Lawler helped set up her teammates to score seven of the next eleven points. But the comeback came too late, as the Blackbirds took the second set 25-21.

The third set belonged to Long Island once again.  The Blackbirds jumped out to an early lead, scoring six straight points with the help of junior Bianca Muniz and the setting up of freshman Vera Djuric.  The early lead proved too much for the Bobcats to overcome as the Blackbirds took the set 25-13, and the game 3-0.

“We got to review our defenses again since we got a little confused at times on what we were doing,” Quinnipiac head coach Robin Sparks said.

The Bobcats will see if they can make those adjustments next game against Fairleigh Dickinson Oct. 8 at 1 p.m.
