Wow! I don’t know what to say. Well, first of all I’d like to thank my peers for electing me in to this position. It is such an honor! I’d like to thank my mom and dad, Susan and Craig Netter, for raising me into the person I want to be. I’d like to thank Steve for always being there for me and for putting up with my “cheerfulness” after a nap.
I’d like to thank my editorial friends for all of their support. I’d like to thank Ela, Jill and Dani for teaching me the ways of the newspaper. I’d like to thank Karen, Marisa, and Mike for promising to get their pages done on time. I’d like to thank Kristen for her humor and her willingness to work hard. I’d like to thank Rebecca for her intelligence and good nature toward an aggravated printer. I’d like to thank Eric and Chris for keeping me humble by poking fun at me. Even when you think I don’t know what you are saying, I really do!
I’d like to thank Scott for his weekly copy editing quizzes. To date I have passed approximately three. I’d like to thank Ed for being there to talk when I have questions and for always wearing plaid and khaki. Having a constant in life keeps people stable.
On a serious note, I really do appreciate being given the opportunity to keep the Chronicle running and to keep making improvements that will help better serve the Quinnipiac community.
I started out as reporter who used to hide in the back of the room during meetings because I was convinced that everyone in that room was best friends and knew everything there was to know about writing for a newspaper.
I soon found out that meetings were just a group of people getting together to do what they like best- write, copy edit or take pictures. No one knew everything there is about putting together a newspaper and not everyone was best friends.
In time, I made friends that I have kept for the last two and a half years. I learned that there isn’t a “special kind of person” who can write for a newspaper. Anyone can do it and the people who did were as different as they came.
When I was elected in the Political Opinion Editor position, I learned so much from the editors at the time and from Professor Paul Janensch, who was our faculty adviser at the time. He used to give us a handout at each meeting with praises and criticisms of the pages. My page occasionally made the criticism, but was usually not mentioned. I was so proud of myself the day my page was mentioned on the praise section of the handout. I think my mother still has a copy of that somewhere!
I’m hoping to make this year’s paper different from last year’s. There are several new editors and although we will miss the old ones, the newcomers will have a lot to offer. It will be fun to work on The Chronicle and everyone is welcome to join.
