Chief of Public Safety Tony Reyes cautioned students with safety reminders when using rideshare services after a reported sexual assault in Bridgeport early Sunday morning.
“While this incident did not occur on Quinnipiac’s campus or involve anyone at the university, I am sharing this information out of an abundance of caution, particularly for those who may travel to or through the Bridgeport area,” Reyes wrote in an email to students.
Sunday morning, the Bridgeport Police Department alerted surrounding agencies of the reported sexual assault.
“According to police, the suspect is believed to have been operating as a rideshare driver at the time of the alleged assault,” Reyes wrote.
The suspect is described as a Black male operating a rideshare vehicle — a 2020 Kia Sportage with the license plate BX-11957 registered in Waterbury. There are no other identifying details yet.
Reyes urged anyone with information related to the incident to contact the Bridgeport Police Department.
Quinnipiac Public Safety will continue to monitor the situation and is in communication with local law enforcement.
Reyes shared several safety reminders for students using rideshare services — a frequent mode of transportation for Quinnipiac students.
“When using rideshare services, always verify the driver’s name, photo and vehicle information in the app before entering the car… Share your trip details with a trusted friend or family member… Sit in the back seat and remain aware of your surroundings… If something feels unsafe, trust your instincts and exit the situation if possible,” Reyes wrote.
