Despite numerous scoring chances, and playing the majority of the second half in their opponents end, the Quinnipiac women’s soccer team fell to Monmouth Sunday afternoon, 1-0. The Hawks took four shots on goal, compared to Quinnipiac’s two, taken by Ashley Wendland and Crystal Burns.
“There were certain things that we did well, and there were other things that we didn’t,” Quinnipiac head coach Dave Clarke said. “We fell asleep on the goal and we got punished on that one mistake. Fortunately for us, Monmouth is one of the teams you can lose to, in terms of the head-to-head.”
The lone goal came in the 20th minute, and off the foot of Monique Plescia. Claudia Vazquez drove up the line, before ripping a shot at goal keeper Jill Kelley. Kelly gave up the rebound, which Plescia drilled to the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.
Quinnipiac (6-3-2, 2-1-1 NEC) had several chances to tie the game. In the 23rd minute, the Bobcats ripped a shot that just went wide of the left post. They had a similar shot prior to the goal as well later in the game
The Bobcats had their best scoring chance during the 60th minute. Quinnipiac crossed the ball in front of the net, while Kemesha Woodfine slid in front in attempt to knock it in, yet missed by only a few feet.
“We created chances, a couple of half chances here and there,” Clarke said. “We got to put them away. You don’t score, then you don’t deserve to win games.”
Kelly made three saves on the day.
The Bobcats continue NEC play next weekend, with two road games against Bryant and Wagner on Oct. 5 and 7.
