The Quinnipiac baseball team lost its 12th straight game Monday afternoon at the QU Baseball Field, as they fell to non-conference opponent UConn, 12-7.
“We got ourselves in a little bit of trouble in the sixth inning,” Quinnipiac head coach Dan Gooley said. “I thought if we played a bit better defensively, we would’ve only gave up one or two runs.”
Quinnipiac (3-25, 2-14 NEC) only trailed the Huskies (19-13) 5-4 entering the sixth inning before UConn scored six runs to open it up.
Gooley will have his 13th attempt at his 500th win Tuesday afternoon at the QU Baseball Field at 3 p.m. when they face Rhode Island.
“Come out and play good,” Gooley said. “Nothing beats quality performances.”
Freshman shortstop Scott Donaghue went 3-for-4 with his first career home run and two RBIs. He made some key plays with his glove as well.
“I’ve been impressed with Scott since the first time I saw him in New Jersey as a junior when we signed him,” Gooley said. “He’s smooth defensively and working hard on the offensive side of the house. He’s gonna be a very good college player.”
Bobcats sophomore pitcher Ryan Walsh made his first start of the season, pitching five innings and giving up six earned runs. He’s 0-1 on the season with a 4.91 ERA.
“He’s a gutsy kid,” Gooley said. “He gave up a couple of tough pitches, but I thought he did a solid job. He’s worth giving another chance to.”
Huskies junior L.J. Mazzilli hit his team-leading eighth home run in today’s game. He also leads the team with a .360 average.
