Men’s hockey beats Canisius

The Quinnipiac University men’s ice hockey team beat Canisius 4-3 on Feb. 15 at the Buffalo State Sports Arena in Buffalo, N.Y.
The team improved its record to 14-11-4 overall and 12-5-4 in the MAAC conference. The blue and gold have only lost once in their last 11 games (7-1-3) and have recently overtaken Sacred Heart for second place in the conference.
Canisius pulled goalie Sean Weaver with 90 seconds left. QU was called for a penalty giving the Ice Griffs a six on four advantage, but they still could not score. With 11 seconds left, Quinnipiac’s Brian Herbert was called for an illegal curve on his stick giving Canisius a short three-man advantage.
Despite the six on three, the Ice Griffs did not score in such a short amount of time and Quinnipiac held onto their lead for the victory.
QU tried to avoid being down three men by contesting that Chris Duggan of Canisius also had an illegal curve on his stick, but Duggan’s curve was ruled legal. This was the first time that Quinnipiac has won on the Canisius home turf in two years.
Neil Breen scored for QU in the first period off of a pass from teammate Ryan Morton but Quinnipiac went into the second period down 2-1 after Canisius answered with goals from Chris Duggan and Fred Coccimiglio.
In the second period the blue and gold added goals from Wade Winkler, his fourth of the year, and Matt Erhart who scored on the power play to give QU the lead through the end of the game. Goalie Jamie Holden improved to 11-5-3 this season with a solid performance in net.
