Quinnipiac women’s basketball loses regular season finale

Up by seven with 7:20 left in the game, the Quinnipiac women’s basketball team let Saint Francis (Pa.) go on a 19-4 run to completely change the momentum of the game.

The Bobcats didn’t go down without a fight though. Down 10, 66-56, with a minute to go, the Bobcats pulled together and got as close as three following a Jasmine Martin layup.

Unfortunately, the run stopped, and the Bobcats fell to Saint Francis 77-71.

Saint Francis’s Alli Williams had a triple-double that included 18 points, 15 assists and 12 steals. The game was tied 31-31 at halftime, but the impeccable ability of Williams to get steals in the second half really helped Saint Francis. She had nine of her 12 steals in the second half.

The Red Flash took advantage of the 30 turnovers created by the Bobcats, most of which came during that 19-4 run. Saint Francis scored 36 points off of turnovers in the game.

The Bobcats couldn’t handle the full court press that Saint Francis (14-15, 11-7 NEC) put on in the second half. But, Quinnipiac head coach Tricia Fabbri did admire how her team stayed together during the end of the game.

“During the Robert Morris game, we as a team could not close,” Fabbri said. “In this game, we did close though.”

Martin had a game-high for the Bobcats scoring 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting. She was followed by Felicia Barron who scored 13 points.

After a great regular season, Quinnipiac (21-8, 13-5 NEC) heads into the NEC tournament on a low note, losing their final two games of the year. As the No. 2 seed, they will play No. 7 Mt. St. Mary’s.

Quinnipiac defeated Mt. St. Mary’s on Jan. 30, 89-73, in a game that featured six Bobcats in double figures.

The No. 2 Bobcats will host Mt. St. Mary’s this Saturday in the NEC Quarterfinals at 2 p.m.
