The Quinnipiac women’s basketball team competed in the Wyndham Miami Holiday Tournament at the BankUnited Center this week and split the two games they played.

Tournament host Miami University welcomed Quinnipiac to the tournament with a 93-48 rout win on Monday. Junior forward Alyssa Jann led the Bobcats with 16 points off the bench, but Riquna Williams (22 points) and Shenise Johnson (20 points) led the Hurricanes to victory.

Miami dominated the first half. The Hurricanes had three double-digit scorers in the first half alone, giving them a 25-point lead at halftime. Quinnipiac also had some quality first half performances: sophomore forward Jacinda Dunbar grabbed 10 of her 12 rebounds and sophomore forward Jackie Mann blocked four of her season-high five blocks.

It was Miami’s superior rebounding that made the difference in the end outrebounding the Bobcats 70-46, while also getting 21 more chances from the free throw line.

The Bobcats rallied back on Tuesday in the consolation game on Tuesday, as head coach Tricia Fabbri earned her 200th career win in a 90-79 victory over Central Michigan.

“The best thing about playing such a disappointing game (against Miami) is that we had such a short turnaround time,” Fabbri said. “We had to focus our attention immediately on Central Michigan, which is the best-case scenario after a tough defeat.”

Dunbar recorded her second double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Her performance over the first two games earned her a selection to the All-Tournament Team.

Along with Dunbar, three other Bobcats finished with double-digit points in the team’s highest offensive output of the season. Kathleen Neyens scored a team-high 20 and grabbed eight rebounds. Courtney Kaminski added 18 points while Mann had 10 points.

The Bobcats took the lead two minutes into the game and never gave it back. However, the game remained close throughout the first half until a buzzer beater by Neyens gave the Bobcats a 7-point lead and the momentum heading into the second half.

The Bobcats outrebounded the Chippewas 43-41, shot 50 percent from the floor and held the Chippewas to 32.1 percent.

“I’ve had a great opportunity to be at Quinnipiac for 15 seasons and get all those wins here,” Fabbri said. “That is something that is very special to me.”

The Bobcats will start Northeast Conference play when they return to the hardwood this Saturday against Monmouth.
