Great Caesar to open Fall Concert

Local band Great Caesar, featuring Quinnipiac junior and WQAQ Music Director Mike Farrell will open for Third Eye Blind on Oct. 10, but getting to that point wasn’t easy. It took a barrage of Facebook posts on the event’s wall and a personal appeal to Third Eye Blind to get the job done.

“What ended up happening basically was that a friend of a friend who knows Third Eye Blind got in touch with them and they were the ones that sealed the deal, because they had to approve the openers,” Farrell said.

Farrell initially contact Student Programming Board Mainstage Chair Megan Doyle over the summer about playing the Fall Concert, but she said that it would be inappropriate to choose one Quinnipiac band over another.

“So then we went for an approach that we’d done that worked once before,” Farrell said. “We just had people casually write on the Facebook wall about wanting my band to play.”

Shortly afterwards Great Caesar also made their appeal to Third Eye Blind through a mutual friend. The resulting pressure forced SPB’s hand, and yesterday, Sept. 29, Doyle and John Stinchon, assistant director of the Student Center, met with Farrell to offer Great Caesar a 20-minute opening slot.

“They said it caused unnecessary frustration, and I sincerely apologize to everyone at SPB that I personally pissed off with all of this,” Farrell said. “I mean, it’s not like we would be going to such lengths if it wasn’t Third Eye Blind. I remember buying the first Third Eye Blind album and playing that thing out in my mom’s car.

“Third Eye Blind is such a huge influence on us, we probably wouldn’t be a band without them,” Farrell said. “We all wanted it pretty bad, it’s not like I’m going to start a riot to open for Ludacris.”
