Reliable sources with knowledge of the situation told The Chronicle that the two female students arrested last Wednesday morning are not connected to the “hate crimes” involving members of the basketball team on campus. The sources have chosen to remain anonymous due to the sensitivity of the matter.
According to the sources, sophomores Emily LoSchiavo and Courtney Stellwag received prank calls on their dorm phone the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 28. They responded by calling a random on-campus room with the message, “You will die in seven days,” an allusion to the movie “The Ring.” The room belonged to a Resident Assistant on the same floor in Dana English Hall where previous hate speech targeting basketball players occurred.
LoSchiavo and Stellwag were arrested early last Wednesday morning and charged with disorderly conduct, first-degree harassment and first-degree conspiracy to commit harassment after allegedly prank calling a Resident Assistant in Dana English Hall. The girls were released after each posting $2,500 bail.
Campus security and Hamden police questioned students in the surrounding area of where the calls originated, as they were able to track the phone call back to the specific residence hall. The girls were allowed back on campus to gather their belongings before being escorted off campus by security at approximately 2:45 p.m. last Wednesday, according to the sources.
WTNH-TV reported that both LoSchiavo and Stellwag were expelled from school. However, the sources said that LoSchiavo and Stellwag have not had their conduct meeting with the University and thus have yet to face further disciplinary action.
