Todd Kaiser’s goal with 1:40 left in overtime lifted Quinnipiac to an 11-10 road win over Air Force. The win was their first in Great Western Lacrosse action this year and ended a three-game losing streak overall.
The sophomore’s seventh goal of the year off an assist from Anthony Poerio capped off a dramatic win that featured seven ties and four lead changes.
The Bobcats (7-3, 1-2 GWLL) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Sean Endicott 2 1/2 minutes apart.
A pair of Falcons goals were answered by Bill Hayes’ sixth goal of the year to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead after the first period.
Neither team held more than a one-goal lead until Ted Dimond’s goal with six seconds left in the third period, his third of the frame, put the Bobcats ahead 9-7 entering the final period.
The hat trick gives Dimond 11 goals on the season, good for second on the team.
Three unanswered goals by the Falcons gave them the lead with 1:19 left to go in regulation.
Hayes scored his second goal of the game with just nine seconds remaining to tie the game at 10-10 and send it into overtime. He also added two assists on the day.
Bobcat netminder Kevin Benzing made 11 of his 16 saves in the first half to keep the Bobcats close, despite being outshot 23-15. With the win he improved his record to 7-3 on the year, having made every start for the Bobcats this season.
On Friday night, the Bobcats fell to host No. 14 Denver 14-8.
The Pioneers, who have won six straight following a win Sunday over Bellarmine and stand alone in first place in the GWLL, jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one period of play.
Managing only two shots in the first period, the Bobcats were held scoreless until 3:21 into the second period when Tyler McCabe made the score 5-1.
Denver scored five out of the next six goals to take a 10-2 lead midway through the third period.
A spirited rally by the Bobcats, led by a hat trick from Kaiser, cut the deficit to 12-8 with just over nine minutes left in the fourth period.
The Bobcats were held scoreless and Denver tallied on two more goals to make the final score 14-8.
Quinnipiac’s season concludes with a road game at Notre Dame on April 18 before the last home game of the year on April 26 against Bellarmine at 1 p.m.
