Women’s hockey holds off St. Lawrence

Quinnipiac women’s hockey scored three first-period goals against St. Lawrence and shrugged off a late resurgence from the Saints’ for a 3-2 conference victory on Friday at Appleton Arena.

The Bobcats (14-7-1, 7-6-0 ECAC) outshot the Saints 34-20 in the game and had eight power plays to the Saints’ two.

The Bobcats got on the board early on freshman forward Eric Uden Johansson’s ninth goal of the season at the 4:52 mark of the first period. Fellow freshman Kelly Babstock and junior defender Bethany Dymarczyk picked up the assists.

The Bobcats soon took advantage of the power play at the 9:15 mark with sophomore forward Brittany Lyons’ sixth goal of the season. Sophomore defender Felica Vieweg gave her a nice pass on the play.

St. Lawrence (9-9-2, 4-4-0 ECAC) got on the board when senior forward Lauren Brozowski finished a play by freshman forward Bailey Habscheid at 12:15 in the first period, to make it 2-1.

Quinnipiac responded with one more goal to take a 3-1 lead only 5:24 later, though, with the third goal of the season by freshman forward Amanda Colin. Freshman defender Shelby Wignall and Lyons were credited with the assists at 17:39 mark of first period.

With 58 seconds remaining in the third period, Kelly Sabatine scored her ninth of the season for the Saints. The goal came on a six-on-five attack, with assists coming from junior forward Alley Bero and sophomore defender Jamie Goldsmith.

“I give Quinnipiac credit, they came out and played hard from the opening draw,” St. Lawrence associate head coach Ted Wisner said. “We were unable to convert on several quality chances, and we played undisciplined at times tonight for which I take responsibility.”

The Bobcats return to the ice on Saturday when they play ECAC opponent Clarkson at 4 p.m.
