Update: This story has been updated to include a statement from a university spokesperson
Quinnipiac University’s Student Government Association voted to pass a resolution for “Title IX Reform,” calling on the university to establish a clear policy within no more than five business days, per a press release Thursday afternoon.
SGA demands “a clear policy requiring that all student reports, inquiries, or outreach to the Title IX Office,” as outlined in the resolution.
This resolution comes as the Office of Title IX has been a large topic across campus, following a recent op-ed published by The Chronicle and QU Athletics’ decision to transition the rugby team from varsity to club status.
SGA notes that students have reported numerous issues with the Office of Title IX.
This includes communication delays, a need for additional staff and resources, increased accessibility in reporting options, commitment to students’ protection and handling of individuals who have several reports filed against them.
SGA’s recommendation is made on the basis of both the Equal Rights Advocates’ Title IX recommendation and the university’s current policy, “which states that the Title IX coordinator must ‘promptly’ contact the complainant upon receipt of a report.”
The press release outlines several other resolutions consisting of demands for clear communication, accessible office hours, holistic review of formal procedures, privacy and anonymity.
The resolution was sent to several members of Quinnipiac’s administration, including President Marie Hardin and Chief Experience Officer Tom Ellett.
“We appreciate the care and concern expressed by students and reflected in the resolution,” Associate Vice President for Public Relations John Morgan said. “We welcome the opportunity it creates for meaningful dialogue. We have already met with representatives from STAT (Speed, Transparency, Accountability, Training) and SGA on these matters, and those conversations have been valuable. We continue to assess and work actively on improvements to how Title IX support is delivered at Quinnipiac, and we look forward to continuing to work alongside students as that work moves forward.”
