- Allison Skidmore was originally taken off the ballot Monday. To read the original story, click here.
Allison Skidmore was reinstated as a candidate for SGA’s vice president of programming position as of this morning, Election Committee Chair Victoria Stankus said in an e-mail.
According to Stankus, “additional information and details” forced the committee to re-evaluate Skidmore’s candidacy.
“After the 2010 Student Government Association elections, the Election Committee will be revising and reworking the current election policy so as to prevent future situations such as this,” Stankus said. “As per SGA policy, any revision or changes will be brought to the entire general board prior to being adopted.”
“I’m just happy to be back on the ballot and running again,” Skidmore told The Chronicle this morning.
Below is the original text of the e-mail, received at 9:56 a.m.:
After our Election Committee meeting this morning, we have decided to make you aware of some changes that we have made in our decision regarding Allison Skidmore’s candidacy.
At 2:30 PM yesterday we carefully evaluated and discussed the information available to us at that time. However, after our decision was rendered, the Election Committee was made aware of additional information and details that called for a re-evaluation of her candidacy.
This morning at 9:30 the Election Committee decided to reinstate Allison Skidmore’s candidacy. This decision was made after much deliberation and consideration of the election policy and what is in the best interest of the student body.
After the 2010 Student Government Association elections, the Election Committee will be revising and reworking the current election policy so as to prevent future situations such as this. As per SGA policy, any revision or changes will be brought to the entire general board prior to being adopted.
Thank you for your cooperation,
The Election Committee of the Student Government Association

The way we can change this as a student body is to create another governing body, such as a Student Senate and/or a Student General Assembly. This would allow students from many different organizations be a representative to the senate/assembly that basically governs the student body. This would expand the power of the student body. I have personally spoken with SGA members who want the student body to have more power, but the demand has to come FROM the student body. SGA cannot do it alone because they don’t know if that is what the student body wants. They cannot engage in one way communication all the time. The students have to be proactive! SGA is here to help. Every executive board member has office hours, a cell phone number, and an e-mail address for students to contact them. Just do it. They’re very responsive and are ready and willing to listen. The outgoing and incoming SGA representatives are great resources…the students just have to take that step and speak up for what they want.

What this whole thing really illustrates is that the SGA isn’t really representative of the student body, especially with one or two outside organizations within striking distance of having a stranglehold on the SGA. It raises the possiblity and perception that those students will look first to their self-selected organization, rather than the student body in general.
QU should really look at reorganizing student government in a way that assures representation for various different student groups. SGAs at many other schools organize that way.

Agreed. How do we as a student body make this happen when SGA would have to agree to make the changes themselves? Ideas!!!??

So your real issue is “orgainization”? I don’t think that you have the ability to represent the opinon of the members of SPB, and what about the SGA side side of the position, did you judge there opinon too? Sounds like the real issue you are concerned about is the separation of SPB and SGA. If that is the case then just say that because that is a difference between the two candidates.
In my opinon, if SPB wants to be incharge of the programing that effects all students on campus and controls that much money, the student body should have a say in who is taking charge of that.

SPB is mandated to be in charge of programming – unlike any other organization on campus. Remember, any student on campus can become a member of SPB and influence the events and programs that occur.
If you want a say… get involved – SPB welcomes everyone!

They have 53% of my student activity money…I would hope they are mandated to program. Shouldn’t they want to program every weekend. I’m not the programming type, I like to go to the events that SPB puts on.

But unlike the SGA executive board the SPB executive board doesn’t get paid $10,000+ a year by the university to do their job or give up every weekend. They are all volunteer.
Just because you've always done it a certain way, doesn't make it right • Mar 31, 2010 at 10:23 am
Evaluate them on a real issue? Sure. Scooter’s committee is very well organized, she takes iniative (bookstore window, revamp of the calendar, chalkboard in cafe hallway), and she responds to things calmly and on time. Vin’s committee tends to be run haphazardly, he is not very well organized, and judging from the general opinion of SPB (the organization of which either Scooter or Vin will be president of, after today), Scooter is the better candidate. People tend to forget that when the student body votes on this position, they are also voting in the leader of SPB, a group that gets 53% of SGA’s budget and is one of the most well-known and largest groups on campus. Constructive comment? SGA should revise their constitution so that the student body (mostly non-SPB members) can’t and shouldn’t have to vote for the leader of an organization they are not part of.

All of you Skidmore supporters writing on this wall. You say that she is a hard worker and that is why she “deserves” this position. Are you saying that Vin isn’t dedicated and a hard worker, because that is NOT true. Why don’t you evaluate them on a real issue or provide a constructive comment about them? And niether candidate “DESERVES” a position.
SPB Member • Mar 30, 2010 at 10:51 pm
SKIDMORE is by far a better candidate! She is dedicated and hard working. She does a lot of work that should be covered by other people but she picks up their slack. She is a proactive member of both SPB and SGA, and would make a great VP of Programing!

I’m glad she’s back on the ballot… She’s such a hard worker and it shows in everything she’s done so far. She deserves this position.

The Greek Conspiracy in SGA needs to end.
Broski • Mar 30, 2010 at 12:02 pm
Greek Conspiracy? Really? It’s called networking. Why do you think that of every single US President, only 2 were not involved in Greek Life in college? People in Greek Life take initiative, they have a vast amount of resources, and they are all also outstanding leaders. This whole SGA=Greek Life joke needs to end. If you have a problem with it why don’t YOU stop watching idly from the outside and do something? The only connection between SGA and Greek Life are the people in it. No fraternities or Sororities receive any benefits from SGA, as they are not allowed to be chartered per their membership rules. Stop blaming Greek Life for things and start thanking them for all the great things they bring to this campus.

When people get this defensive, you can be sure that they’re hiding something…
Broski • Mar 30, 2010 at 2:04 pm
And so the useless criticism continues. Keep up the great work helping the campus by bashing people you don’t understand.

to parallel the federal govt… sure the greek (rich/elite) do some good things for the community (country) at large. but the positions in the SGA(white house/senate) are almost sealed off from non-greek (poor) members..the greek voting bloc on campus is ridiculous…sure, you take initiative, but you also have hundreds of lock-solid votes to count on if you have any desire to run.
and the US presidents bit?….”they have a vast amount of resources” aka theyre freakin’ loaded.

I think this thing is rigged! They just don’t want her to win cause she is not Greek.
lol • Mar 30, 2010 at 10:22 am
If anything, this helps Scooter….

Something is seriously wrong here. Do you smell it? I do.
Not even 12 hours later, they go from unanimously voting the candidate out to bringing her right back in.
Very, very strange if you ask me.
Odd • Mar 30, 2010 at 10:56 pm
I agree there is definitely something strange about this whole situation. It seems that someone has it in for Scooter. I don’t know why because she would be an AMAZING VP of Programing!
Great! • Mar 30, 2010 at 9:57 am
That’s great to hear! Should be a good race.
