SAM, SigEp swing for the fences in the fight against breast cancer

Quinnipiac University students stepped into the batters box to take a swing against breast cancer.

The Society for Advancement of Management (SAM) and SigEp co-sponsored a home run derby on Oct. 28, for all Quinnipiac students.

For $5, students would receive ten outs to hit as many home runs as possible, much like the Major League Baseball home run derby.

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, all proceeds from the event went to the American Breast Cancer Association.

Lindsay Towle, president of SAM, was quite optimistic about the event.

“People are donating money here and there,” she said of the various groups that had donated money.

At the end of the event, Towle hopes to raise at least $1000. “Last year we had a walkathon,” Towle said. “We raised $1000 last year and we’d like to raise the same.”

With Breast Cancer Awareness month coming to a close, this event will mark the last of its kind during the month of October. Still, with it being such a common cause, it is likely that there will be more events to combat breast cancer in the future.
