The African lion population has dropped by 30 percent in the last two decades, leading to a proposal by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to make them the last big cat to receive protection under the Endangered Species Act, according to the Washington Post. Human development in the lions’ area has increased, and the cats were hunted by ranchers after they fed on livestock for survival. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services believe, however, that the lions’ biggest threat is the growing human population in sub-Saharan Africa, which experts believe will double by 2050, according to the Washington Post.
