Mary Beth Tinker, the lead plaintiff in the 1969 Supreme Court case Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District, will speak to students on Nov. 12 in the Grand Courtroom of School of Law at 1 p.m. Tinker will discuss free speech and civic awareness. Tinker and two other students were suspended from their school in Des Moines, Iowa in the 1960s for wearing a black armband in school to commemorate soldiers who died in the Vietnam War. Tinker took the suspension to the Supreme Court and the court ruled that the First Amendment allowed the students to wear the armbands. The event is part of the “Tinker Tour,” sponsored by the Student Press Law Center, where Tinker and Mike Hiestand, an attorney with an expertise in student media law, travel and speak around the country.
