Habitat for Humanity’s extreme local makeover

The Quinnipiac chapter of Habitat for Humanity will be creating their own Extreme Makeover: Home Edition experience by funding and building a house for a low-income family in the Greater New Haven area.

This project is being performed in partnership with Greater New Haven Habitat for Humanity.

Through the collaboration of the Quinnipiac University, Yale University, Southern Connecticut State University and University of New Haven Habitat for Humanity campus chapters, the schools will work together to raise $25,000 to fund the project.

Students from each of the university chapters will also provide all construction labor, working weekends to complete the project.

The house is scheduled for dedication in late April or early May.

The house, nicknamed Collegiate Build 2004, is located at 24 Francis St. and will be featured as part of an extensive 30-single family home development in the area.

Several of the homes, including the Collegiate Build home, will be customized to meet the needs of a disabled family member that will eventually live there. Widened doorways and lowered countertops designed for easier wheelchair access will be a few of the features of this home.

Jennifer Lorraine, senior and Habitat for Humanity president, is excited to be participating in such a special build for the community.

“QUH4H is very excited to participate in its first Collegiate Build with Greater New Haven Habitat for Humanity and our partner universities,” Lorraine said.

“Primarily we hope that our contribution does something great for the city of New Haven and second, reflects a positive image for the Quinnipiac community.”

Since a few of the organizations recent fundraisers, in conjunction with Chartwell’s Dining Services, including Battle of the Chefs and the Chicken Chow Down Challenge, the chapter has raised close to $2,000, nearly one third of the chapter’s overall goal to provide to the build.

“We have high hopes of raising our pledge amount of $5,000, even though it is proving to be a difficult goal. Everyone at QUH4H thanks the students, faculty and staff who have made a donation of money and/or time to Habitat within the last few months,” Lorraine said.
