    Students have fun partying sober

On most college campuses, drinking seems required for a successful night of partying. However, Quinnipiac offers other activities for students who prefer not to drink.

School organizations and clubs organize a lot of alternatives. QUAD, Quinnipiac University after dark, focuses on weekends and late night activities. Tina Kamalanathan and Christopher McLaughlin, both graduate assistants for the QUAD program, discussed many of the different activities QUAD provides.

On Fridays and Saturdays, 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., QUAD provides events such as bowling, psychics, tarot cards, bingo madness, karaoke, and trips. Kamalanathan said students in freshman orientations “seem to say they aren’t very interested in drinking.”

“QUAD gives students an alternative to drinking,” McLaughlin said.

“We co-sponsor activities with different organizations,” Kamalanathan said. She discussed a dance QUAD and the Black Student Union organized called “The Remix.”

Although QUAD events are usually attended by underclassmen, QUAD tries to focus different events for everyone.

Coming soon, QUAD will present “QU Idol” and a spin off of the “Wade Robson Project”. QU Idol will be similar to the hit star search show “American Idol” and the “Wade Robinson Project” will have Quinnipiac students judged by a choreographer in their dancing skills.

“You are always guaranteed something to do,” McLaughlin said.

Aside from having fun and being safe, it is a good opportunity to meet new people that have the same interests as you.

Numerous student organizations sponsor different events on weekends to entertain and insure there are things to do.

Melissa Nappi, a junior marketing major, said, “I have events on the weekends for CAP and Habitat, we chaperone dances for CAP on Friday nights, and some weekends we work on houses for Habitat.”

She occasionally goes to the mall, movies and sometimes even goes to dinner, “just to get away from campus for a while,” Nappi said.

Every once and while she goes on a road trip with her friends.

“I went to the city last weekend, and saw a show.” A road trip is a good way to enjoy the weekend. “Last year we went to Maryland for the weekend, spur of the moment,” said Nappi.

Staying on campus for a weekend can also be fun.

Teri Callahan, residential advisor in Irma and graduate student in the MAT Program, said, “It’s easier to hang out with people around campus. You don’t have to drink you can just hang out. There’s nothing wrong with watching a movie and relaxing.”

“The gym is open later, I’ve seen people there late at night,” Callahan said, suggesting a healthy weekend activity.

New Haven is also close enough and weekends are “the best time to take the shuttle,” she said. Students can go shopping, to museums, restaurants and plays.

On Saturday, Oct. 25 at 10 p.m., QUAD is having a Fall Festivities event, including pumpkin decorating, candy apples, cider and more.

QUAD is always looking for new ideas and activities and hold committee meetings Tuesdays at 11 a.m. in SC 213.
