As spring semester begins, many students look forward to Spring Break. It’s the week after midterms, allowing for the opportunity to unwind. But what is it that people do on their mini vacations? Here are just a few ideas from the QU community.
A recent Quinnipiac poll asked Americans their favorite vacation destinations among a list of several U.S. cities. Topping the list was Orlando with 24 percent of the votes. San Francisco was close behind with 20 percent, followed by Las Vegas at 19 percent, Washington, D.C., at 14 percent, New York City at 13 percent, and Chicago at 4 percent. Now, this being said, do Quinnipiac students agree with these results as to where to spend their Spring Break?
Florida is indeed a popular spot for Spring Breakers, due to the large number of activities available, the generally favorable climate, and reasonable cost. Students make small groups to travel the coast and have fun in the sun, while a few may consider a vacation with their families. Freshman Ashlee Bennett is contemplating a trip to Florida with her mother to visit her grandmother.
However, many college students want something a little more exotic. Some destination ideas include cities in Mexico, cruises to Caribbean Islands, or spending some time in a Central American paradise.
Some students will be able to take advantage of the beauty of the Dominican Republic thanks to the Student Programming Board. SPB arranged a trip to Punta Cana for the week of March 9. SPB’s Erin Giroux said the students will be staying at the Sunscape Punta Cana Grand Hotel as part of a package including food, drinks, water sports, and entertainment.
The trip was arranged through Apple Vacations, with prices ranging from $1,190 for a double room to $1150 for a triple room. Insurance is being offered to students on the trip, and a free bus service to and from Bradley Airport is being provided by SPB.
Even though many students are planning on long distance traveling for their week off, there are a few who have chosen to stay local for one reason or another. Junior David Blanchard says that he will be staying home during his break for two main reasons: the severe lack of funds for travel and a promise to his girlfriend to attend an anniversary party for her parents.
Whatever the decision for a Spring Break destination, it will hopefully be a welcome rest from the drudges of this semester.
