It has been over three years since listeners have heard a hit single from singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow. Past singles “Leaving Las Vegas,” “All I Wanna Do,” and “A Change (Would Do You Good)” have all raced up the music charts to the number one spot quickly. Her debut album “Tuesday Night Music Club” propelled her career and opened the door for the angry female songwriter trend that followed.
Her new single “Soak Up the Sun” is looking to follow in the footsteps of its predecessors. It recently peaked at number eight on the “Billboard Top 40″ music chart. It can be found on ” C’mon, C’mon,” Crow’s much-anticipated follow up to her 1998 album “The Globe Sessions.”
Released April 16, “Soak Up” is written and produced by Crow and features guest artists such as Lenny Kravitz, Stevie Nicks, Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, Don Henley and Emmylou Harris.
With a lineup of 12 new songs, this CD is much more up beat than anything she has released in the past. “Steve McQueen” is a perfect example. It’s full of big guitars, loud vocals, and stupid lyrics that you just cannot help but sing along to. It’s the perfect selection for blaring in the car with your windows down this time of year.
Of course the album does have its ballads with “Its Only Love” being on the top of that list. The song describes the arrival of a postcard from a cheating significant other.
The album is well done and definitely one of Crow’s better efforts. Other tracks such as “C’mon, C’mon,” “Safe and Sound,” and “Weather Channel” probably will not be hit singles, but are worth it for picking up the album.
As of now Crow is scheduled to put on a show in California on April 27, yet it is posted that more dates are to follow by late summer. If you cannot wait for the tour dates to surface you can also “Soak Up” Crow this month on a VH1 special, “Sheryl Crow and Friends in Concert.”
