Dean Czerwonka, Class of 2011 representative and former candidate for Student Government president, resigned from SGA on Monday, Oct. 12.

Czerwonka told The Chronicle that he was “overwhelmed” between his classes, internship and SGA obligations.

“Academics are a huge importance to me and I wanted to focus during times when my major [finance] is picking up,” Czerwonka said. “I needed some time for myself right now, and I was juggling close to six meetings a week, internship and academics.”

Czerwonka officially finished his tenure on Monday, Oct. 12 when he told Vice President of Student Concerns Victoria Stankus of his resignation. His spot, currently vacant, will be filled following a special election at a date to be announced.

“Dean expects a lot out of himself,” Class of 2011 advisor Nicolette Yevich said. “When he was not giving 110 percent to everything he did, it forced him to do what he thought was right.”

Yevich, associate director of the Student Center, identified Czerwonka as a unique member of SGA who set an example for his fellow representatives.

“He’s really committed to the process,” Yevich said. “He challenges. He’s one of the members who is always asking why. And his challenging and questioning helps other people understand that they need to question.”

Fellow Class of 2011 representative Dan Dempsey described Czerwonka as one of the better reps for the class.

“When he first sent us the e-mail about his resignation, I immediately responded, ‘Noooooo,’ from my BlackBerry,” Dempsey said. “He handled responsibility really well, and he knew how to get the job done.”

Czerwonka became one of the hot names in Quinnipiac politics during the presidential elections of last year between him, current SGA president Louis Venturelli, and Class of 2011 representative Nicholas Rossetti. Once Venturelli was announced the winner, Czerwonka told The Chronicle that “if I was to lose, I wanted to lose to him. He ran probably the most ethical/cleanest race that I have seen.”

Czerwonka was a representative in his sophomore year, and took part in the Student Advisory Leadership committee, Programming committee, and Student Concerns committee prior to his resignation.

While Czerwonka is currently taking a leave from SGA, expect to see his name on a ballot for next year’s executive board. He said he hopes to run for the Vice President of Student Concerns position.

Czerwonka was pleased with the progress of his class cabinet thus far, and expects good things in his absence.

“My class will be fine,” he said. “They are a group of students who truly care and have a driving passion for the University. Every one of them is a hardworking individual.”

Letter of Retraction:

In today’s issue of The Chronicle, it was stated in this article that I was running for the Student Government position of Junior Class Representative. Although the notion has been considered, I have never went on record to confirm any such statements. It is to my understanding that a thorough review process must occur before ANY student declares to run for Special Elections. With that said, I therefore retract any previous statements written by The Chronicle declaring my official candidacy for the Student Government position.
