The Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey team dropped two road games last weekend, losing to the No. 6 St. Lawrence Saints and Clarkson Golden Knights. With the losses, Quinnipiac falls to 3-24-5 (2-13-5 ECAC) on the season.
Although the Bobcats scored first, they were bombarded with goals from the Saints in the second period. Quinnipiac couldn’t overcome the deficit and suffered defeat to the St. Lawrence Saints, 6-2.
The Bobcats got on the board first in the 13th minute, when Quinnipiac’s Kelley Davies shot the puck past Saints goalie, Brittony Chartier, into the corner of the net for the goal. With less than two minutes left in the period, St. Lawrence struck back, tying the game at 1. The Saints’ Karell Emard and Britni Smith assisted Tara Akstull, who slapped the puck past Tia Wishart’s stick side for the power-play goal.
Midway through the second period, St. Lawrence took the lead when Marianna Locke snuck the puck past Wishart for the goal. With four and half minutes left in the period, the Saints extended their lead to 3-1 when Kristen Roche got the puck in a scramble in front of the net and sent it past Wishart.
Carson Duggan added distance to the St. Lawrence lead when she put the puck in the back of the net with less than a minute left in the second, giving the Saints a 4-1 lead. With 27 seconds left in the period, Quinnipiac cut into the Saints’ lead with a goal from Chelsea Illchuk.
After a four-goal second period, the Bobcats tried to calm the storm created by the Saints. Their efforts failed three minutes into the period, when St. Lawrence made it 5-2 with a goal from Alison Domenico. With a mere six seconds left in the game, the Saints made the lead 6-2 thanks to a goal by Akstull, who assisted by Domenico and Locke on the goal. The buzzer sounded and the final was score was 6-2, in favor of St. Lawrence.
The Bobcats battled with the Clarkson Golden Knights from the first face-off, but came up short, losing 2-0 on Feb.14.
Quinnipiac and Clarkson battled to stalemate in the first. It was not until about five minutes into the second period when Clarkson’s Marie-Jo Gaudet passed the puck to Britney Selina who slapped the puck past Bobcat goalie Nanna Holm-Glaas for the goal.
In the third period, Clarkson put distance in their lead thanks to a goal from Danielle Boudreau slipped the puck past Holm-Glaas for the goal with five minutes left in the game. Kali Gillanders was credited with the assist on Boudreau’s goal. The game came to a close and the Bobcats were handed a hard loss, 2-0, to the Clarkson Golden Knights.
The Bobcats battled throughout this game but just came up short. The defense did kept the game close, with the help of Holm Glaas’ 28 saves. Quinnipiac’s Achilles heel was its failure to capitalize on the power-play opportunities Clarkson afforded them. The Bobcats struggled again with shots on goal in this game, a credit to the play of Clarkson’s defense.
The Bobcats return to action on Feb.20 against rival Yale at Ingalls Rink and Feb.21 for their final game of the season against Brown in Providence, R.I.
