    Cold as Ice

The temperature in Connecticut hovered around freezing just before winter break, but that didn’t stop 14 Quinnipiac students from meeting at the East Haven Town Beach prior to their final exams. A December dip was in order.

The story begins in 1990, when the first annual Penguin Plunge took place in Madison. People from across Connecticut took to the icy water to raise money for the Special Olympics of Connecticut (SOCT). Since then, more than half a million dollars have been raised.

More than 100 people gathered in East Haven on Dec. 6 to continue the tradition, and together they raised nearly $15,000, with over $1,500 coming from Quinnipiac students. Two Quinnipiac teams were present: the university chapter of Roots and Shoots and the “Quinnipiac Otters.”
