This past weekend, the Quinnipiac men’s golf team competed in the ECAC Championships at Long Island National Golf Club in Riverhead, N.Y. Yale won the tournament by shooting a combined score of 892 (303-288-301).
Captain Ian O’Connor, Brady Giroux, Charlie Niland, and Ben Cooke shot the best scores for Quinnipiac. Giroux led the Bobcats with a total score of 230 (77-80-73), finishing 25th individually. O’Connor shot a 232 (79-78-75), Niland shot a 236 (78-79-79), and Cooke shot a 240 (82-79-79) for a team total score of 934 (316-316-302).
The Bobcats shaved 14 strokes off their combined score on Saturday to score a 302, compared to the two rounds of play on Friday, when they averaged a score of 316.
After the first two rounds played on Friday, Quinnipiac was in 10th place. Captain O’Connor, Brady Giroux, and Charlie Niland were tied after Friday’s rounds with a total score of 157.
On Saturday, Quinnipiac played well, only to hold a tie for 10th place. Giroux, O’Connor, and Cooke had their best round of the tournament on Saturday.
“The first time any of us have seen the course was in the practice round on Thursday,” captain O’Connor said.
He implied that the scores might have lowered on Saturday because they had learned the ins-and-outs of the course after Friday’s rounds. Normally, the more you play a certain golf course, the more comfortable you feel at that course allowing you to shoot lower.
Quinnipiac heads to the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championship in Brewster, Mass. this weekend for their second to last tournament of the season.
“[Saturday’s] round really gave us some confidence going into next week,” said captain O’Connor.
