Two Quinnipiac basketball players were charged with assault in the third degree and breach of peace in the second degree early Sunday morning, according to a Hamden Police report.
Both players have been released after each posted a $5,000 bond and are scheduled to appear in court in Meriden Sept. 26.
Ike Azotam, 20, allegedly struck another student in an attempt to break up a fight, according to the report. The student assaulted was treated for his injuries at the University’s medical center.
Police identified James Johnson, 21, as a student who struck another student in the face.
No other students involved were mentioned in the police report or were available as of press time.
The university is investigating the situation and released a statement on the situation.
“The university is investigating the matter,” said Lynn Bushnell, vice president for public affairs. “The students involved have been fully cooperating with the Hamden police, campus security and
student affairs. The investigation will follow the university’s normal judicial process.”
Quinnipiac’s athletics department did not have a comment at this time.
Johnson, a senior guard, led the Bobcats in scoring last year, averaging 16.1 points and was selected to the First Team All Northeast Conference.
Azotam, a sophomore forward, grabbed 164 rebounds on the season, second on the team behind Justin Rutty.

“Ike Azotam, 20, allegedly struck another student in an attempt to break up a fight, according to the report.”
This implies that Azotam hit someone in order to stop the fight. However, he hit another student who was attempting to break up the fight.

Let’s face it, there are so many accounts of what happened, the general public will never know the truth. Hell, I think the parties involved don’t even have their stories straight. The Q.U. Student Body is really taking this too far. As an African-American, I see NOTHING wrong with what was written. It’s the reporter’s job to report both the good and the bad, so get over it. I never did and never will see this as a race issue because this time, it’s not. AND from a real world perspective, what do you care about more, some random Joe getting into an altercation or a high-profile celebrity/athlete? Don’t think too hard now. These guys are athletes! They know they’re being watched; people actually admire them. Let’s face it, they messed up and now, they’ve got to own it. If they can’t handle the scrutiny now, they have no chance of making it past college b-ball. My opinion of them has not changed for now…

This whole comment thread is ridiculous.
Members of the Men’s basketball team assaulted innocent students who had nothing to do with their “motive,” but simply, just knew the guy they were after.
Innocent students minding their own business took the hit for someone who might have deserved it.
This wasn’t a “fight.”
It was planned attack, just on the wrong group.
This was clearly an assault.
Stop believing the hype.

All you ignorant people disgust me more than you did when i first came to this school. Its bad enough all you stuck up white kids get everything handed to you, these basketball players actually worked hard to get here, so just because they were raised to finish a situation that was started out of pure disrespect doesnt make them “thugs” or “terrorist.” Everyone needs to stop talking shit if they dont know the ENTIRE story, REAL STORY. Theres two sides to a story so just because you hear it from a little frat boy doesnt make it right. For all I care all you haters of the basketball team and “TKE” can jump off a cliff. This is just another situation where someone gets what they deserve, not saying innocent bystanders deserved to get hit, but fights happend people who arent intended to get hit usually do so get over it. I hope smooth recoveries for all those hurt in the madness, but everyone keep thier mouths shut-because thats what started this whole thing anyways. Go home and do your homework- because this situation doesnt concern you or your ignorant input.

You say “honestly guys” but youre just as bad as everyone else. You act like everyone at Quinnipiac hates black people and are using this event to attack you. THATS NOT TRUE! You talk down to us saying we’re “stuck up white kids”. just because we called them “thugs”. Their skin color has nothing to do with them being “thugs”. Attacking other students makes you one. This school couldnt give two shits less if they we’re Blue, Brown, Yellow, Green or White. Yes, even white. If you attack other students and send them to the hosiptal after throwing them down the stairs and giving them 17 stitches. You ARE a thug. So stop attacking all the “spoiled white kids” because students at this school dont appreciate the violence. Their skin color or the sport they play does not concern us. If the hockey team or lax or anyone did this it is UNACCEPTABLE. They represent our school as D1 athletes and as such have now shamed our school on a national level. So everyone remember, Your skin color or race or religion does not matter to the Quinnipiac student body. But if you do something like this it will not be accepted whoever you may be.

Honestly, all these comments disgust me. First of all, If you don’t know what happened keep your mouth shut because you only making the situation worse for others. Second, Ike didn’t touch anyone and Bo was only defending himself. Third, just because someone gets in a little fight does not make them a “thug”. Are you kidding me! Go live in Bridgeport for a week and then come talk to me about “thugs”. If your scared of Ike and Bo then you must not know what goes on in the world and you must be a sheltered individual. If this situation involved any other students then this situation would not even be heard of and everybody would be minding there own. Not only that, but there was another fight the same day. Does anyone know about that? Nope. Does anyone know about the boy who was arrested for possession of weed? Nope. I don’t even have time for this stupid school article that clearly needs to do more research before publishing bullshit.

It’s crazy how people can make accusations and assumptions based off of “rumors”…The same players whom Everyone shows “love and support” too when seen around campus and at games are now “thugs and criminals”, when neither have any criminal record of any sort smh…The funny thing is that once this gets cleared and the truth is revealed everybody that’s talking negative will be the same “fans and supporters” at the games with the “I Love Bo/Ike” posters shaking their hands after the games…The good thing about being an athlete is that you learn how to bounce back and adapt to adversity in all forms…On that note, any and everybody riding the ignorant bandwagon can SD.

To call someone a “thug” without knoiwng them is heinous! Thats racial profiling. It amazes me that we are still at this point in today’s society. No matter how you try to disguise it you are judging someone solely on the color of their skin. I have seen plenty of Caucasian student drunk and starting fights on the shuttles, outside of toads or at the shuttle stop. Does anyone stop to call them thugs? No, absolutely not. People wonder why this school pushes diversity so hard? Its because people like this have no idea what they are talking about. Think before you open your mouth. Whether they are atheletes or not, there were two parties in this fight and both should be punished equally.

This school is trying to sugarcoat the story by saying that this clown Ike was trying to break up a fight? You people understand that breaking up a fight and then punching someone is the most contradictory thing you can do. Let’s be real, the school is trying to sugarcoat this and make it seem not nearly as bad as it was. The basketball team wen’t around punching random kids that weren’t even in a frat. Just because our BASKETBALL TEAM IS GARBAGE doesn’t give them the right to go around punching kids. Actually, I would go around punching random kids too if I was a benchwarmer for a horrible D1 basketball team. And we had to bail these clowns out for a total of 10 grand? I wonder who gave the funds to bail them out…
Qu Student • Sep 21, 2011 at 3:05 pm

dumbfight • Sep 21, 2011 at 11:49 am
I know one of the kids that was jumped by the basketball players, it was over a misunderstanding with one of the players girlfriends. And it is in no way a race issue considering that two of the kids that were attacked were African-American. And to say that it was in an attempt to break up a fight is total bullshit. One of the kids was attacked on Yorkhill campus on the way to the parking garage after being identified as the original kids fraternity “big”. It will be a very sad but not surprising if Quinnipiac lets this slide.

Oh give me a break all of you! They are THUGS-the reason they are here is because they play basketball. You all live and retreat back to your white neighborhoods over vacation and summer break and the minute this breaks out around you look what happens! So gross and ashamed right now! Go walk around the ghettos in New Haven and realize that you go to school outside the most deadly city in the country. I don’t give a darn where these kids are from, they have officially brought this mess to our campus and we should DEMAND AN EXPLANATION FROM OUR FELLOW PEERS AND ADMINISTRATORS. God–go read the comments on the Register and see what people think about us…And congrats to these jerks, you have officially made it more difficult for every single African American student on campus–your parents will be so proud! They better get kicked out of this school! As a campus, QU needs to come together and resolve these issues peacefully, do some community service and really grow the hell up!

The fact that people on campus were beat up enough to be sent to the emergency room and come out with stitches, and the people that did that to him, basketball team or not, are still on campus is completely ridiculous. Yes, the law was put into action, but where the hell are the other consequences?
Student 4 • Sep 20, 2011 at 10:08 pm
Typical: alcohol + QU basketball does not always lead to violence. Please get your facts together before you make such bold statements. The matter is being dealt with, and that’s that. Whatever comes from it is between the two parties and doesn’t need to be discussed by everyone else. However everyone is entitled to their own opinions of these matters as they’re not posted all over the internet but rude, or very subjective comments can only be by those who were there at the time. This is a big blow to those basketball boys as well. Hopefully everything is worked out for both parties involved without making this a huge thing.
letsberealnow • Sep 21, 2011 at 2:36 am
well the matter is being dealt with by the university, which according to some of the accounts here, is giving preferential treatment to the players. if the basketball players did in fact attack the kids and/or are supposed to be suspended because of the charge but are not, then that is a very big deal and everyone should be concerned. even more so if the police has done any wrongdoing here with a false report. thats just facts. when there are accusations like this its not just between the two parties.
plus i don’t care if your intentions were good in the beginning and you wanted to break up a fight, if you send someone to the hospital you’re no longer a peacemaker you obviously did something wrong. these kids are given tons of scholarship money (which is coming out of tuition dollars that students like myself are paying) for being on the qu team, i’m sure they’ve been told what the expectations are of their behavior. these guys are not kids, johnson is legally an adult, they made a bad decision and they should face the music; don’t baby them!
