Hartford edges women’s soccer

After attempting only three shots on net on Thursday night at Al-Marzook Field at Alumni Stadium, the Quinnipiac women’s soccer team found itself on the losing end of a 1-0 contest against Hartford. The non-conference loss adds to a shaky start for the Bobcats (0-2-1).

En route to their fourth win, the Hawks (4-0-1) received offensive assistance from forward Caitlin Alves, whose goal in the 28th minute was ultimately the difference in the contest.

Despite a deflection from Quinnipiac goalie Jill Kelley, who was able to successfully defend against a series of attacks off a corner kick seconds prior, the Hawks forward punched the ball back towards center for the only goal of the game.

As the night went on, it was clear that the little attack from the Bobcats put them in a deficit from the start. Their three shots on goal was their lowest total of the season, as they averaged 13.5 shots over the course of their two prior contests.

Senior Furtuna Velaj, who has been the primary source of offense thus far this season with two goals against Canisius, was unable to register a shot on goal on Thursday.

With the shutout, Hartford sophomore goalkeeper Erin Quinlan extended her streak of consecutive scoreless minutes to 379:06. Quinlan, however, did not make any saves on the evening.

The Bobcats also found themselves with foul trouble, leading in the department 10-7. However, it was Chanel Johnson of the Hawks who would acquire the only yellow card of the game, an occurrence Quinnipiac could not capitalize on.

With the win, the Hawks improve to their best start since 1999.

Quinnipiac will look to end its two-match skid on Tuesday, as the squad travels to Yale for a night game at 7 p.m.
