Sophomore goalie Eric Hartzell recorded his third 30-save performance in his last four games, but Princeton swept the Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey team, 3-0, in an ECAC matchup Tuesday night at the TD Bank Sports Center.
Princeton’s special teams took advantage of the man-advantage as it scored on two of the four chances against Quinnipiac. Princeton, ranked No. 1 in penalty killing, killed off all six of its penalties in the match, including a five-minute major.
Both teams were scoreless in the first period. Princeton outshot Quinnipiac 10-7.
In the second period, Princeton scored its first goal of the game at 7:56. As sophomore defender Mike Dalhuisen was called for a tripping penalty, Princeton’s Cam Ritchie took advantage on the power play scoring his first goal of the season.
Princeton held the lead through the second intermission as it received some help from the crossbar. With the Bobcats on the power play, senior defender Zach Hansen ripped a shot from the point and rang the iron in the final minute of the second period.
In the third period, the Tigers extended their lead as Taylor Fedun scored his first goal of the season at the 12:16 mark, also on the power play.
As the Bobcats battled to get a tally on the scoreboard, they pulled their goalie in the final minutes of the game and added an extra skater. The Bobcats failed to keep possession of the puck, and the Tigers took advantage of the empty net. Kevin Lohry cleared the puck from the far blue line to score an empty net goal, registering his second goal of the season.
The Bobcats were outshot in the match as the Tigers held a 33-23 advantage on shots.
