Quinnipiac sophomore goaltender Felicia Frank has broken the program’s single season saves record in the Bobcats’ 4-0 NCAA Tournament victory Thursday night against the Franklin Pierce Ravens.
Frank broke the record, formerly set during the 2001-02 season by Mel Courtemanche ‘03 at 986, in the closing minutes of her 29-save shutout performance against the Ravens.
She finished the game with 990 saves on the season so far. To put that number into perspective, Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey goaltenders, juniors Matej Marinov and Dylan Silverstein have combined for 747 saves on the year.
“To have that much trust in your goalie, it’s huge for the team, and the way that she’s battled this entire year…its just amazing,” senior forward Emerson Jarvis said.
Frank has been recognized as the ECAC Goalie of the Year, as well as a top three finalist for the NCAA Goalie of the Year for her outstanding numbers this season.
“There’s a few breakaway saves, and they just kind of blow you away,” head coach Cass Turner said.
The Falkoping, Sweden native has played in all 40 of Quinnipiac’s games this season, posting a 1.48 goals against average and 10 shutouts.
“This is obviously the first time I got to see her,” Franklin Pierce head coach David Stockdale said. “She’s the real deal.”
Frank looks to add to that save record this weekend in the next round of the NCAA Tournament. The Bobcats will return to the ice Saturday to take on the No. 2 University of Wisconsin Badgers with a chance to advance to the Frozen Four on the line. Puck-drop is set for 2 p.m.
