Quinnipiac women’s ice hockey wins its second game of its road trip to upstate New York by a score of 5-1, defeating the Union Garnet Chargers Saturday afternoon to earn six points on the weekend.
Another dominant win from the Bobcats began in a first period that set the tone for the surging squad. Despite the Garnet Chargers placing their first shot on frame, Quinnipiac put 14 unanswered shots on freshman goaltender Emma Rheaume.
Quinnipiac’s dominance appeared to frazzle Union, with the Chargers unable to even get a stick on the puck for the majority of the first period. Some quality saves on junior forward Kahlen Lamarche and senior forward Tessa Holk kept the contest scoreless, but Quinnipiac’s willingness to dig at the puck in the crease and fight for the second-chance opportunity paid off at the 11 minute mark.
After stealing a mishandled puck in the low slot, senior forward Emerson Jarvis would finally beat Rheaume five-hole to put the Bobcats up 1-0.
Although that would be the only score for the Bobcats of the period, the 21-2 shots on goal differential after the first was a great starting point for the second period.
In spite of the promising period, one big loss came when Holk took a hard hit against the boards by two Garnet Chargers, forcing her to exit the game late in the first period. Holk would not return after the collision.
The five-minute major boarding penalty on Garnet Charger’s junior defender Quinn Dunkle would give the Bobcats the man advantage into the second period, but they were unable to capitalize. However, a second Charger penalty, this time on sophomore forward Karianne Engelbert, would not be squandered by the Bobcats. On the man-advantage, sophomore defender Makayla Watson rifled a shot through traffic from just past the blue line, and Jarvis’s deflection would light the lamp for the Bobcats.
68 seconds later, the Bobcats would once again find the back of the net. Mirroring the offense on the power play, Lamarche earned her fourth point of the weekend by throwing the puck through traffic, with sophomore forward Taylor Brueske tipping the puck past Rheaume.
Three minutes later, the Bobcats would put the game out of reach for Union. Brueske earned her second point of the evening, saucing a pass to sophomore defender Zoe Uens, who would find a seam in the Charger’s defense for the Bobcats’ fourth unanswered goal.
Even after Union slipped a shot past sophomore goaltender Felicia Frank, the Bobcats remained calm.
The story of the final period was once again Jarvis. After two straight goals in the second, the Edmonton, Alberta native would score her first collegiate hat trick, returning the Bobcat lead to four and icing the game for the Bobcats.
The second win of the weekend bumps the Bobcats to 23.5 points in ECAC play, moving the squad to third in the conference behind only the Yale Bulldogs and Princeton Tigers.
Quinnipiac returns to home ice on Friday, Jan. 16, to take on the Dartmouth Big Green. Puck drop for the conference contest is set for 6 p.m.
