Hollywood’s most beloved films, ‘When Harry Met Sally,’ ‘Princess Bride,’ ‘This is Spinal Tap,’ ‘Stand by Me, ‘ and so many more, were brought to life by the legendary director Rob Reiner.
On Dec. 14, 78-year-old Rob Reiner and his 68-year-old wife Michelle were found dead inside their home in Brentwood, Los Angeles. Authorities are investigating the deaths as an apparent homicide, as the couple suffered injuries consistent with a knife attack. The official cause of death is unknown, and the investigation is still ongoing.
The son of Rob and Michelle, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, has been arrested and booked for murder in connection with the deaths and is being held without bail.
Reiner’s work has been long beloved by audiences. His films are not only fan favorites but timeless classics and staples in cinematic history. The loss of a director who created such meaningful art is devastating, but his ideas, influence and creative legacy will live on.
In remembrance of Reiner’s legacy, audiences can revisit his iconic films and the impact they continue to have today.
A personal favorite of mine is ‘When Harry Met Sally.’ Reiner actually met his wife, Michelle, while directing the film as she worked as a photographer on the set. Their romance is said to have inspired Reiner to change the film’s original, less optimistic ending to a happy conclusion seen in the final cut. The two got married in 1989, the same year the film was released.
‘When Harry Met Sally’ is the ultimate love story. The film follows Harry Burns (Billy Crystal) and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan). The story chronicles a decade of the evolving, on-again, off-again friendship turned relationship between the two. It is one of the most comfortable movies of all time. This story showcases how time can leave us very quickly, but a connection can take a long time to disappear. The two went through an up and down, messy, yet exciting progression together, which ultimately led them to realize they can’t see a life without each other.
I mentioned this movie in my article “Movies you need to watch once in your life” because it is such a special, deeply human story that can make you look at love, friendship and the progression of connection in a whole new light. As a lifelong fan of romantic comedies, this film will always stand out to me.
‘Princess Bride’ is another timeless classic that I would be surprised if someone had never watched, let alone heard of it.
The movie was released in 1989 as an adaptation of the novel, “The Princess Bride.” The film succeeds by combining genres that are rarely balanced so effectively within a single narrative, including comedy, romance, action and drama. Rather than simply parodying the traditional fairy tale, the film subverts traditional tropes with sharp humor while still embracing sincerity and heart. Its enduring influence can be tied to its endless quotable dialogue, distinct characters and central themes of loyalty, love and revenge. Together, this lets the film serve as a classic satirical yet genuine romance, allowing it to resonate across many generations.
‘This is Spinal Tap’ was one I have not watched yet, but after looking into the film, it is being added to my next watch list. This movie is a mockumentary that satirizes the world of rock music by following a fictional British heavy metal band called Spinal Tap on a disastrous American tour.
‘This is Spinal Tap’ is widely considered one of the earliest, most influential uses of mockumentary style, and that approach strongly shaped shows like ‘The Office’ and ‘Parks and Recreation.’ It established several techniques that later television shows picked up, like characters speaking directly to the camera in “interviews,” handheld camera work, and awkward pauses. This film demonstrated how realism and character-driven humor can heighten satire.
‘Stand by Me,’ released in 1986, is based on the Stephen King novel, “The Body.” The movie is about four kids, Gordie (Wil Wheaton), Chris (River Phoenix), Teddy (Corey Feldman) and Vern (Jerry O’Connell), during the last summer before middle school, as they embark on an overnight hiking trip to find the dead body of a missing kid. While there are many stories highlighting female friendships in film, there are not many that dive into the emotional and deep connections between a group of boys. ‘Stand by Me’ highlights just that.
Each of these kids have their own issues in their lives but find solace in their friendship through shared experiences. Their friendship is an escape from their otherwise difficult childhoods as the boys comfort each other, show empathy and create a safe space, themes that aren’t typically seen in film through male characters. This film will remain a reminder of how essential friendships really are.
Rob Reiner’s films continue to endure because they combine heart, humor and insight in ways that feel both personal and universal in his stories. His work has left an undeniable mark on film and culture. Revisiting his iconic movies not only honors his legacy but also reminds us why storytelling can touch us in ways we didn’t know were possible.
