The reason that a majority of SGA is Greek has more to do with the fact that the type of person who is most likely to join a fraternity/sorority is the type of person who will run for SGA. Greek life at this school allows students to develop the leadership skills that enable them to be effective SGA members. You can say that SGA does not represent the campus as a whole, but that would be the fault of all the students who do not run for SGA. If you have a problem with who is in SGA and what they do, then you should run next year and do something about it.

thinker brings up a good point…there are very few real changes that bond can make within SPB without the approval of SGA, which is unfortunate because SGA knows so little about how SPB functions.

SPB is vastly limited in what they can do…the organization must have any and all changes to their by-laws approved by SGA, and do not have the ability to vote internally on their own president. for the largest programming body on the campus, they have very little power in controlling how their organization is being run. some SPB members even received backlash this year for campaigning for the candidates, even though it was virtually their only means influencing who would lead their organization next year.

as for the greek life discussion, there is no question that greek life will continue to dominate SGA. while i don’t think that SGA members use their positions to benefit their chapters, it is a shame that other dedicated members of student government (and the student body, for that matter) may be denied the opportunity to hold a desired position because they don’t have the support that a greek candidate does during election season.
