Who doesn’t like a high class, sexy drama about the life of private school teenagers in New York’s glamorous Upper-East Side? The new and addicting television series, “Gossip Girl,” premiered on Wednesday, Sept.19 at 9 p.m. on the CW. The show is based on the best selling novels by Cicely von Ziegesar and served as a fairly accurate version of the books.
The actors delivered a fast-paced performance filled with plenty of catfights, high-profile parties, and hook-ups. The show is modern and fresh, with a great soundtrack that includes music from Rihanna, Justin Timberlake and Timbaland.
Alicia Gentile, a freshman english major spoke of the new show, “Fashion, money, and drama…It’s like the new O.C. of New York. It’s fabulous.”
Kristen Bell from “Veronica Mars” narrates the series as Gossip Girl, a texting and blogging expert who keeps tabs on the most important teens in Manhattan and the juicy drama that everyone is longing to hear.
Leighton Meester, a 21 year old former child model, plays the role of Blair Waldorf. Blair lives a fabulous life that is constantly shadowing her best friend Serena van der Woodsen, played by Blake Lively. Blair secretly envies Serena, who is popular and blonde, and previously attended boarding school in Connecticut to escape the burdens of her past. Their friendship has been on thin ice ever since Serena just picked up and left without letting Blair know.
Blair has more important things to focus on, like her smart and gorgeous boyfriend Nate, played by Chace Crawford. He’s the good guy on campus, but he too is preoccupied by the mistakes from his past to have an honest relationship with Blair. Serena and Nate have a history together even though Nate and Blair have been an item since childhood. Serena made the mistake of sleeping with Nate and then proceeded to leave town.
After a short break, Nate and Blair resolve their conflicts but Blair is still bitter about the fact that one of her friends would do this. Serena is slightly successful in trying to salvage her friendship with Blair as the two meet at the Palace Hotel over cocktails to discuss what has happened to them. For a short amount of time, their friendship is back to normal. Yet Serena is angered when she is not invited to Blair’s ‘Kiss on the Lips’ party. So instead, she goes out to a concert with the not-so-popular Dan, who is played by Penn Badgley. Dan and Serena hit it off instantly, even though she told herself she would take a break from her notorious party girl image and lay low for a while.
Who thought that one group of rich kids could have so much drama and back-stabbing in their lives?
Still, the show is relatable for girls, women and maybe even guys. It is a perfect series for college students, whose lives are surely filled with plenty of excitement.
Writers Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage helped make the novel come to life in this fabulous new drama. Hopefully, the coming episodes will continue to captivate audiences as much as this premiere did.
